Selection: tested as FF-1003
Origin: Fresh Forward, Eck-en-Wiel, The Netherlands

Jive has been selected by Bert Meulenbroek of Fresh Forward. The license control is being managed by Fresh Forward. Jive is a late June-bearing strawberry variety. It is predominantly suited for outdoor summer production on sandy soils.

Jive is characterised by its compact plant habit and dark green leaves. The flower trusses ar long enough to ensure a good display of the fruit and ease of harvest. The plants start to runner later.

Flowering and harvest period:

The quality of the flowers produced by Jive is one of its strong features. The flowers are characterised by a large amount of pollen and a fertile receptacle resulting in a low percentage of misshapen fruits. The flowering period is clearly 7 to 10 days later than Sonata and Elsanta. The number of flowers per truss is lower, however, this is compensated by the the fact that Jive produces more flowertrusses. This results in an extended harvest period that is evenly distributed. The flowertrusses usually remain just beneath the leaves.

Fruit shape:

The primary fruits are typically longated with a somewhat broad and flattened nose. All the other berries are very uniform of shape and size. The majority of the berries are long conical. Misshaped fruits are rather rare in warm conditions during fruit set.

Fruit quality:

Jive forms large fleshy fruits. The shiny orange-red appearance is an attractive characteristic. The slow ripening of the fruits results in an average fruit weight that is significantly greater than that of Sonata. Fruits are also firmer and less susceptible to bruising. Fruits at maturation remain at a marketable vibrant red colour for a longer period making it possible to delay harvest if required to suit market demands. The strawberries are also fairly resistant to rain.

The yield of Jive is up tot 30% higher than Sonata. The strawberries do not click off as easily as Sonata because the flowerstems of Jive are more rigid. However, the pickingspead is better due to the higher average berryweight and the open planttype. Jive does not requiere much work for fruit grading because of the good berrysize, the uniform shape, the low percentage of misshaped and the firm texture of the berries.

Pest and disease resistance:

Jive is not as tolerant to powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca macularis) as Sonata but less susceptibility than Elsanta. Jive’s susceptibility to crown rot (Phytophthora cactorum) is similar to Elsanta. However, Jive is more susceptible to fruit rot (Botrytis cinerea) even under tunnels. The extended flowering period demands an accurate preventive fungicide treatment.

Growing experiences:

Jive is suited to cooler climates of Western Europe, primarily north of the Alps. It is analternative to Florence in normal and frigo cultures and a well suited variety for summer waiting bed and table top productions as an alternative for Elsanta and Sonata. Jive has greater resistance to heat stress than Sonata and develops a sufficient canopy before the plant starts flowering. Due to these characteristics Jive bears fruits of consistent size enabling efficient harvest throughout the whole season.
